NAECI is a national labour rule agreement that results from the collective bargaining process between the parties. The signatory parties jointly form the National Joint Council (JNC) responsible for overseeing the work of the NAECI. The NJC secretariat coordinates negotiations between the parties for the review of pay rates and other aspects of the agreement. The membership structure and the constitution of the NJCECI form the basis of a single table agreement and set the standards for the practice in place.

Continuous improvement in standards has had a positive impact on workers` safety and well-being conditions; and it continues to have a great influence on the performance of the engineering industry. Following a review of NAECI in 2018, a two-year contract was successfully concluded and NJC Communique 13 (18) provides full details of the new provisions as well as rate and pay increases for the period 2019-2020.
